Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following
statement today on the massive earthquake that struck Tibetan areas of
Qinghai Province in China, killing hundreds of people, injuring tens of
thousands, and leaving thousands of others buried beneath debris:
“The
thoughts and prayers of Members of Congress are with the people of
China and Tibet, and the loved ones of those lost in the powerful
earthquake that struck the region yesterday. Many of the victims were
students, teachers, and workers; and thousands remain trapped beneath
the rubble.
“I hope it is a comfort to those affected by this
terrible tragedy that so many around the world are praying for them at
this difficult time.
“In the aftermath of this earthquake, we
offer our full support for the efforts to dig through fallen homes and
classrooms, rescue survivors, save lives, and restore the foundations
of this community.
“As Americans and as members of the
international community, we must stand squarely behind the emergency
response operations and rescue missions. Together, we can help the
people of this region recover from this tragedy.”
