HUNDREDS OF TIBETANS INTERRUPT “BUSINESS AS USUAL” AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS FOLLOWING TIBETAN ACTIVIST’S SELF-IMMOLATION

Car Procession Partially Blocks First Avenue as Tibetan Community Honors Fallen Independence Activist Lobga Rangzen and Demands Justice from United Nations

NEW YORK, NY —Hundreds of Tibetans staged a large-scale demonstration outside of the United Nations Headquarters, disrupting normal operations at UN Plaza, as the United Nations opened its doors for the first time since the self-immolation of 52-year-old Tibetan independence activist, Lobsang Palden, known widely as Lobga Rangzen.

The demonstration featured a coordinated car procession that occupied First Avenue directly alongside the UN complex. Vehicles draped in Tibetan flags and “Free Tibet” banners lined the street, creating a continuous cacophony of honking that drew the attention of arriving diplomats, UN employees, and passersby. At the center of the demonstration was Lobga Rangzen’s hearse. Demonstrators, dressed in chubas (traditional Tibetan dress), lined the streets to pay their respects.

On the evening of July 2, 2026, Lobga Rangzen set himself on fire outside the UN headquarters, in protest of China’s occupation of Tibet. He is one of over 170 Tibetans to self-immolate against Chinese occupation. This act came one day after the July 1implementation of Beijing’s draconian new “Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress Law,” codifying China’s assimilation policies and criminalizing Tibetan identity. In a six-minute video message recorded hours before his death, Rangzen explicitly stated:

“I don’t want you to mourn for me, I want you to continue the struggle for Tibetan independence, because the lack of independence is the root of all our problems.”

“The historic turnout of the Tibetan community today shows that Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s sacrifice has galvanized generations of Tibetans. While diplomats walk into these air-conditioned rooms to conduct routine bureaucracy, hundreds of us are standing on their doorstep to wake the world up. For 67 years, the Chinese government has tried to crush Tibetan identity, and they have failed time and time again. Now, they are trying to criminalize our existence entirely through the newly enacted “Ethnic Unity” law. We will not allow the UN to look the other way while Beijing legalizes the total erasure of our people. ” says Tenzin Myinlek, Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet.
