A-Nya Sengdra (Tib: ཨ་ཉ་སེང་སྒྲ།) is a Tibetan human rights defender and climate activist who was working on anti-corruption and environment issues in Chinese-occupied Tibet.

He remains in prison, having served six years of a seven-year prison sentence.

A-Nya Sengdra has been imprisoned by the Chinese government for his successful mobilization of Tibetan nomads to carry out environmental campaigns targeting illegal mining and hunting. In September 2018, he was detained on charges of “gathering people to disturb public order” and “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” – phony charges China often brings against human rights defenders. 

On December 6, 2019, in a sham trial, A-Nya Sengdra was found guilty and sentenced to seven years in prison. A number of Tibetan human rights groups and his lawyer began to appeal for his release. On April 27, 2020, he was supposed to go before a court in the Guoluo Prefecture, but China postponed the hearing for his appeal due to the judge’s “sudden illness.” 

There is no further information about A-Nya Sengdra’s current condition after six years in prison. But it is not too late to take action for A-Nya.

Students for a Free Tibet submitted a letter to the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu imploring them to take action for A-Nya. We asked for two specific actions:

1. Send representation from the Consulate in Chengdu (or Beijing) to request access to his trial. 
2. Make a request for information about A-Nya Sengdra’s case and urge for his immediate release on grounds that his arrest and detention are politically motivated and directly connected to his political and human rights activism.
