Chemi Lhamo: The Power of Young Tibetan Leaders

February 22, 2019

Earlier this month, Chemi Lhamo—SFT Canada Board Member—clinched a well-deserved election victory to serve as the University of Toronto Scarborough Student Union President. During this special time, there is a story that Chemi shared that deeply resonated with me:

“I was 11 yrs old when I moved to Canada and something I really struggled with was the idea of “home.” It didn’t get any easier as I hit the teens but thankfully, SFT opened its doors to the youngin’ Chemi and encouraged me to not only explore these ideas but to understand and challenge the complex situation of our statelessness. SFT has helped me grow in so many ways, I cannot fathom where I would be today without SFT and the mentorship I received from the leaders of this organization.”

Chemi’s role within the Tibetan Freedom Movement embodies SFT’s commitment to youth leadership and the empowerment of future generations of Tibetans. Her story is not a coincidence or a miracle: it is a testament to both the hard work of a young, courageous leader, and the generosity of the village behind her.

So I want to take a moment to celebrate all the countless supporters—like you!—who have made Chemi’s amazing story a reality! Every donation, every volunteer, and every supporter plays an integral role in paving the path to make victories, like Chemi’s, possible.

SFT takes pride in training and mentoring thousands of young leaders like Chemi every year. From the East Coast Conference in Amherst, Massachusetts this coming April, to the Free Tibet! Action Camp in India in October, together, we can make 2019 an even greater year for youth power!Support these initiatives today by making a donation at http://sfthq.cc/donate
