The U.S. Department of State is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of imprisoned Tibetan writer Go Sherab Gyatso, as part of their #WithoutJustCause political prisoners campaign, which was launched in January 2023. They have compiled a list of 22 political prisoners whose cases highlight growing authoritarian efforts to silence dissent and suppress fundamental freedoms across the world.
Go Sherab Gyatso has been imprisoned by the Chinese government four times. His first arrest at the age of 22 was for the “crime” of displaying images of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In December 2021, Go Sherab Gyatso was given a 10-year prison sentence in a secret trial. His crime? Writing essays critical of Chinese government policies restricting freedom of expression in Tibet. There are growing concerns that his health condition is rapidly worsening and that he is not receiving proper medical attention in prison.
Go Sherab Gyatso is the recipient of the 2022 SFT Lhakar Award for Courage. SFT will continue to stand firmly with Go Sherab Gyatso and demands his immediate and unconditional release!
